What causes these already prone for oil consumption Subaru engines to start burning the oil? There are 4 to 5 oil drain back holes in the pistons that plug up not allowing the oil to drain through the oil scraper rings. The rings also get stuck in the piston not scraping the oil off the cylinder correctly. In July, 2014 a class action lawsuit was filed against Subaru saying some its most popular models burn oil at an excessive and expensive rate. Specifically the lawsuit points to an alleged problem with the piston rings which can wear out early and lead to engine failure. Our 2019 Forester (base) used absolutely no oil during the first 3,500 miles, when I had it changed at the 6-month point (for warranty consideration). Now at 4,800 miles and the oil level still hasn't moved at all from the first oil change. BTW - At the first oil change, the dealer over-filled it by 1 qt. OK, after some further research, this isn't sounding great. Here's what's going on with my 2010 Forester 2.5X with 51000 miles (I should also say that I have always had the oil changed every 5000 miles or less, I am the only owner, and I have never had any major issues previously): 1) The engine pings pretty badly on 87 and 89 octane. Subaru oil issue- So it is obvious there is a problem with the Subaru's using oil. We have been told that a oil consumption test must be done. I was curious as to what this test consisted of. So I called the dealer while my gal was on the way to have this test done.
